Swimming to the top of the nation

Kevin Glennon shows off his two medals after he just earned first place in the 100 fly and backstroke in the conference

1st in the conference. 2nd in the city. 3rd in the state, 15th in the United States. Kevin Glenon started swimming at the age of 5, and committed to swim for the University of Kentucky on November 10.

“I chose Kentucky because it had the best team culture out of all the teams I visited. I also liked the idea that they weren’t the best team winning it all. I liked that they are getting better every year and we will have something to work towards,” Glennon said.

Glennons favorite part about swimming is the individuality. He feels responsible for every aspect of his performance.

“I get motivated every day by my teammates and coaches. I also know if I work hard every day I will feel prepared at the big meets,” Glennon said.

Glennons club coach Jason Roberts is known for versatile swimmers. His training is definitely paying off, because he is able to swim all of these events at an extremely competitive level. Glennon swims the 100-meter fly, the 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter freestyle, the 200-meter individual medley, and the 400-meter individual medley.

“My best event is the 100 fly,” Glennon said. “ Last year I was 3rd in the state and 15th nationally, I hope I can rank higher this year.”

Last year at the state tournament Glennon finished one second out of 2nd place and two seconds out of 1st. Glennon will face the same sophomore and junior again this year, if they advance to the state tournament again. He works hard to face tough competition, every second counts in swimming.

“I think it is extremely hard mentally when you train for months for a race, it is easy to overthink your training and preparation,” Glennon said.

Aiden Leamer has been swimming with Glennon for 9 years and admires his hard work and determination.

“He is super fun to be around, and cares about the team,” Leamer said. “He’s extremely kind, and always encourages his teammates.”
