“I like art, music, I enjoy math, that’s a controversial one. I’ll probably end up doing something math related in college. But with my interests, there are so many things that I could do, and that scares me. I sit up awake at night knowing that I’m at a point in my life where what I choose to do in my spare time, will determine my career. I could do anything I want to. I have the ability, which is a huge pressure. It’s like what if I pick the wrong thing and do something I end up not enjoying or can’t support a family on? There’s also a part of me that says, you have all this potential. You can work towards the future of humanity. Don’t waste it doing something inconsequential.”

As a former college career counselor and academic advisor, I always encouraged my students to think of their career as the book of their life. You don’t have to figure out “what you want to do for the rest of your life,” rather just start with thinking about what you want to do in your first chapter. The experiences you have and the people you meet in your first chapter will lead you to your next chapter. And who knows? The trajectory your career takes in your third chapter may not even exist yet, so enjoy the ride along the way! Wishing you the best of luck!
