Knights ‘hungry’ to advance
Update: The #2-seeded Knights defeated Teays Valley 35-7 on Friday night to advance to a Round 2 rematch against Turpin, the ECC co-champions who defeated Kings in a tight 20-16 battle on Sept. 18.
The Knights football team is preparing for their first playoff game against Teays Valley tonight. The Knights took a 9-1 overall record into the playoffs with their only loss coming in a close game to the Turpin Spartans week four.
Head Coach Andy Olds is very optimistic about this teams chance this year.
“Our guys are really excited to play and want to keep playing,” Olds said. “Our greatest strength is our overall attitude. Our boys are hungry.”
Preparing for the game has been all about conserving energy. “This week’s practice has been really good,” Olds said. “We don’t want a hard week of practice leading up to a big game … We’re learning how to back off from practice but still keeping our edge.”
This week has also been about preparing for a team that the Knights are unfamiliar with. “We’ve watched a lot of film on them,” Olds said. “We’ve been studying how they play against similar style offenses as us.”
But Teays Valley seems to be no team to underestimate. This is their second year in a row in the playoffs and come in with a lot of confidence.
“Their quarterback is their overall best player,” Olds said. “He’s a good scrambler so he’ll be a good match up for our defense.”
The Knights also know they could be a looking at a rivalry rematch if they get passed this week. The Knights would play the winner of Glen Este vs. Turpin if they win.
“Our boys would love a second shot at Turpin,” Olds said. “But to do that we need to focus on this week’s matchup first.”
The Knights play tonight, November 6th, here at the Kings Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm and pre sale tickets are $8. If you can’t make it to the game, you can follow updates on Twitter @kingsathletics.
