BPA moving on to state

Business Professionals of America is the leading CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) for students wanting to further their potential in business related fields such as business management, office administration, information technology, as well as design and computer related fields. BPA is open for students starting from a middle school level, and up through college, with 72 different categories for students to pick from and compete in.

Students from 22 states start out at a regional level, and move on from there.

“Students who place in top 2 in tests or top 1 for judged events go to state. State competition includes top qualifiers from all regions in state of Ohio. The top 2-5 (depending on category) in each category at state go to nationals,” business teacher, Brittany Selhorst explains.

Kings typically has around 80 students compete each year from 5 different teachers. Some of the more popular categories being IT, Digital Media, Small Business, and Marketing. This year 26 students are moving on to the state level of the competition, among them are digital media art student, Mackenzie Mettey, and business student, William Forgham.

Mettey is a second year competitor, and her group did a video production about the dangers of drinking and driving.

“My group and I then had to take this topic and make a promotional package and video that revolved around said topic,” Mettey says. “We did some really cool effects this year! We took some underwater shots with a Hero4 GoPro and even shot some slow motion effects of glass breaking that didn’t make the final cut.”

Forgham and his group are first time competitors who did the global marketing category and had to design and market a new team for the NHL.

“We had to pick a location based off of supportive data, then design a team name and logo,” said Forgham.

Both groups put in a tremendous amount of effort as they worked on the project almost every weekday for a month. Though it is a competition, students are able to learn real world experience from the projects they choose.

“We chose global marketing because all four of us had taken some form of a business class, so we figured we could go into this with plenty of prior knowledge, but we’d also get the opportunity to learn plenty of new things about the business world.” Said Forgham.

Through hard work and dedication, both teams will be advancing to state on March 17-18 and hopefully on to the national level from May 5-9.
