‘The Drowsy Chaperone’

Coming soon to Kings High School Theatre is the spring musical “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a musical within a comedy.

“We have done a lot of musicals that have contained comedic moments, but the last musical that contained this much and this style of comedy was probably “Anything Goes” in 2009,” said Scott Hayward, the shows director, on bringing comedy back to the KHS stage.

The musical’s official website gives the following synopsis:

“With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not so bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.”

Written by Bob Martin and Don Mckellar, this show is considered a musical within a comedy and has a smaller cast than the usual big production shows done at Kings, leaving Scott Hayward, the shows director, with a big decision.

“ We had 50 people audition for the musical, which is a largest turn out for a musical since I started directing here at Kings, so we had a lot of very difficult decisions to make since there were only roles for half of the people auditioning.”

However a smaller show doesn’t stop the quality of a good comedy show.

“The Drowsy Chaperone is a show that offers a lot of challenges in learning comedic timing, both in terms of line delivery and physicality and I thought that this is something that our students could really learn from.”

The Drowsy Chaperone will be performed in the King’s auditorium Apr. 28-30. with three evening shows. Ticket information will be announced.
