As the end of the year approaches, so does awards season. It is a time where films compete to become the best of the best. While some movies have the chance to come home with the gold, others are looking to make gold at the box office. This year’s crop of fall movies has a little bit of everything for everybody. It marks the return of multiple auteur directors whose previous films have been lauded by critics as well as the return of franchises that have been run into the ground but looking for another shot.

Here are my most anticipated films for the remainder of 2018:

With so many great choices to spend your hard-earned money or MoviePass credit on, here are some popular options that are sure to be at the top of the box office, but might not be the most exciting option.

15. Bumblebee

What It’s About: On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee the Autobot seeks refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the brink of turning 18 years old and trying to find her place in the world, soon discovers the battle-scarred and broken Bumblebee. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns that this is no ordinary yellow Volkswagen, (Paramount.)

Why You Should See It: This could prove to be a rebound for the failing Transformers franchise. The film is directed by Travis Knight and seems to be heavily inspired by The Iron Giant.

14. Boy Erased

What It’s About: Jared is the son of a small-town Baptist pastor who gets outed to his parents at age 19. He’s soon faced with an ultimatum — attend a gay conversion therapy program or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith, (Focus Features).

Why You Should See It: The second feature from Joel Edgerton tells the story of a boy discovering himself in his restrictive family. Based on a true story, this film is a perfect antidote for today’s harsh political climate.

13. Beautiful Boy

What It’s About: David Sheff tries to help his troubled son Nic overcome his addiction to methamphetamine, (Amazon Studios).

Why You Should See It: This will be Timothee Chalamet’s second attempt to win a best actor award after last year’s highly lauded film Call Me by Your Name.

12. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Release Date: December 14, 2018

What It’s About: Spider-Man mentors a teenager from Brooklyn, N.Y., to become the next web-slinging superhero, (Sony Pictures Animation).

Why You Should See It: After the astounding success of this year’s Black Panther, Sony-Marvel is also attempting to create the same enthusiasm. This will be the second feature film in the Spider-Man universe this year.

11. A Star is Born

What It’s About: Seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers — and falls in love with — struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jackson fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons, (Warner Brothers).

Why You Should See It: Lady Gaga attempts to add an Oscar to her shelve of accolades in a directorial debut from Bradley Cooper.

10. Roma

What It’s About: In 1970s Mexico City, two domestic workers help a mother of four while her husband is away for an extended period of time, (Netflix).

Why You Should See It: Alfonso Cuaron’s follow up to the technical masterpiece Gravity. This film is much smaller concerning scope but tells a much more personal story. Netflix will attempt to gain more recognition for their original programming.

9. Mid90s

Release Date: October 19, 2018

What It’s About: In 1990s Los Angeles, 13-year-old Stevie spends his summer navigating between troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a skate shop, (A24).

Why You Should See It: This is the directorial debut of Jonah Hill with a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and it comes from the studio that produced Lady Bird.

8.  The Girl in the Spider’s Web

What It’s About: Journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander encounter a web of spies, cybercriminals and government corruption, (Sony Pictures).

Why You Should See It: A reboot of the popular Girl With the Dragon Tattoo franchise. It stars Claire Foy hot off her Emmy nominations from Netflix’s The Crown. The film looks to be a visual feast with a new take on the series.

7. First Man

Release Date: October 12, 2018

What It’s About: The riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history, (Universal Pictures).

Why You Should See It: The next film from the newly Academy Award-winning director Damien Chazelle. Ryan Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong in a gritty telling of the first mission to the moon.

6. Widows

What It’s About: In debt because of their dead husbands’ criminal activities, four women take fate into their own hands and conspire to build a future on their own terms, (20th Century Fox).

Why You Should See It: With a script from the writer of Gone Girl and the director of 12 Years a Slave, this crime thriller will break genre conventions to deliver an arthouse action thriller starring Viola Davis and Liam Neeson.

5. Halloween

What It’s About: It’s been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived a vicious attack from crazed killer Michael Myers on Halloween night. She now faces a terrifying showdown when Michael returns to Haddonfield, Ill. — but this time, Laurie is ready for him, (Universal).

Why You Should See It: This new reboot of the Halloween franchise disregards the previous installments in the franchise and will be a direct sequel to the original classic. From the producers of Get Out, this film looks to be a horror sequel that will be deserving of the name.

4. If Beale Street Could Talk

What It’s About: After her fiance is falsely imprisoned, a pregnant African-American woman sets out to clear his name and prove his innocence, (Annapurna Pictures).

Why You Should See It: Barry Jenkins wowed two years ago with his second feature film Moonlight. This film is an adaptation of the classic James Baldwin novel and looks to bring Jenkins fresh style to the forefront once again.

3. Under the Silver Lake

What It’s About: Young and disenchanted Sam meets a mysterious and beautiful woman who’s swimming in his building’s pool one night. When she suddenly vanishes the next morning, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy, (A24).

Why You Should See It: David Robert Mitchell delivered one of the best horror films of the decades with It Follows. Now he is back with a new thriller starring Andrew Garfield. The film has been delayed multiple times, but now it has a prime awards season spot.

Why You Should See It: Drew Goddard is the writer behind 2014’s The Martian. His stylized approach resembles that of a Quentin Tarantino ensemble film. The all-star cast will breathe life into this epic mystery.

What It’s About: A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the troupe’s artistic director, an ambitious young dancer and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare — others will finally wake up, (Amazon Studios).

Why You Should See It: After last year’s Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino is back on the opposite side of the genre spectrum. A reboot of the classic horror film, Guadagnino will bring his arthouse style to the genre with a brilliant cast.
