Wrestling with competitiveness and character
His demeanor is what makes him stand out from the rest. He approaches everything he does with a mature, confident attitude. His pre-game hype adds an undeniable presence to the team. He led them down to the field carrying his dad’s flag from his tour in Afghanistan and prayed for the whole team in a huddle on the sideline.
Gavin Legualt is one of a kind.
“It is amazing to see how Gavin carries himself every day, he definitely makes a good leader,” football teammate Noah Spencer said.
Legualt is now entering his last wrestling season of High School, and he has high hopes to make it special. He has a unique approach to wrestling.
“I get ready for a match by listening to my go-to playlist, and go to a quiet place to jump rope. During this time, I envision how I want the match to go and what moves I will use to take down my opponent,” Legualt said.
Legualt has struggled with some injuries in his career, luckily none have been career-ending. “Since it’s my senior year, I’m going to be taking things a little bit safer to make it all the way through the season without injury,” Legualt said.
Legault loves the aggressive aspect of wrestling, describing each match as a six–minute dog fight until the best man wins. Listening to Legault, it’s easy to tell that he believes wrestlers have to be strong willed with a warrior mentality.
“The thing that makes a wrestler a wrestler is he enjoys pain. When you put a wrestler through pain they thrive,” Legault said.
Legualt is a very hard–working kid with a lot of self-confidence. He has recently been accepted into the Navy. Balancing school, athletics, and JROTC is very challenging for a High School Senior, but he manages to do it all because he loves the grind.
Adults complain that today’s teenagers lack manners; Legault is not one they have to worry about. Legualt refers to his peers as “sir”, “ma’am”, and he even refers to his teammates as “brother”. Gavin’s presence is appreciated. His character is something that others strive to have.
Everyone could use someone like Legualt in their life to positively influence how they go about their day.
His last season is one he wants to make the most out of. Legualt wants to leave wrestling with no regrets.
“My expectations for this year are to wrestle in my one hundredth varsity match, and hopefully make a state-run with a few of my teammates,” Legault said.
