Basketball season tipped off with a slow 0-4 start, but head coach Nick Molz hopes to turn things around going forward.

“We play a very tough schedule to start the season and have also dealt with some injuries,” Men’s Varsity Basketball Head Coach, Nick Molz said.

Senior JD Moss suffered an ankle injury missing the first game but returned against Walnut Hills. Junior Michael Mussari broke his collarbone during football season but hopes to return soon.

“This first week definitely tested our toughness. We are excited to get everyone healthy and competing at a high level,” Molz said.

It is still early in the season and the team has plenty of time to turn things around going forward.

“I think we didn’t get the start we wanted at all but we know our potential and know we can get back on track and play for an ECC title,” senior Carter Smith said.

Over Winter break the team will be taking a team-building trip to Pensacola, Florida to participate in The Pensacola Beach Tournament.

“I think everyone on the team is excited to go to Florida. Spending 3 whole days with each other is the best way for us to grow closer as a team,” senior Daniel Georgeson said. “I think we’ll play even better after spending that time together.”

The trip is something Coach Molz has always wanted to do.

“We have been fundraising for something like this for a while now, I think that it is going to be a great experience for the team,” Molz said.

The trip, originally planned for last year was unfortunately canceled due to covid concerns. Nevertheless, the boys and coaches plan to depart December 26th and return on the 30th.

“The Florida trip is going to be amazing. Of course, the basketball will be fun, but also just making fun memories while down there will bring us closer,” Smith said.

Countless hours have gone into planning the trip and the players are ready to head to Florida.

“Planning for the trip began about 8 months ago. We had to apply to get in the tournament, get approval from our school, organize hotels, flights, rental cars, meals, etc. There is a lot that goes into it all,” Molz said.

Molz hopes the hard work that went into planning the trip pays off.

“It is definitely going to be worth it. This is going to be a trip that the players and coaches will always remember.”
