Oscar Nominations: Student Vote

The 91st Academy Awards has been one of the most controversial in recent memory. With no host and outrage over multiple decisions made by the production – including the infamous Best Popular Film category –  this Sunday’s broadcast has been clouded in uncertainty and judgment. The Academy is often criticized for its inability to be in touch with the moviegoing public.

Last week the production faced backlash for announcing their decision to not air all 24 categories live which included the awards for Best Cinematography and Best Editing. Some high-profile celebrities that spoke out against the decision included Guillermo Del Toro – last year’s winner for Best Director – and Russell Crowe, who Tweeted, “It’s just too… dumb for words.” The Academy’s decision was recently reversed and the production will showcase all awards live.

This incident followed other controversial announcements which included not inviting each performer nominated for Best Original Song to perform during the broadcast per tradition as well as the removal of Kevin Hart as the host after controversial anti-gay comments. This has left a vacancy in the slot that will not be filled.

Every decision has been made in order to boost the ratings of the show which has declined each year (last year’s telecast brought in an all-time low with only 26.2 million viewers), but the decisions made have been subsequently reversed after an intense backlash.

The Hollywood bubble magnifies its own controversies. Kings High School senior, Devin Biesbrock told the Knight Times, “I will be watching, but I wasn’t aware of the issues. I just wish Bohemian Rhapsody wasn’t nominated.”

The Academy Awards will take place Sunday, February 24th at 8:00 pm EST on ABC.

Here is the Kings High School student body’s vote for 14 of the categories’ nominees:
