Kings board grants snow-day reprieve
Kings Local School students will not be required to make up extra snow days accumulated this year, according to an announcement released Wednesday.
“At the April 21st Kings Local School District Board of Education meeting, our board of education approved a recommendation to amend our 2014/2015 school calendar so as to move from days to hours,” said the release. “The KLSD exceeds the minimum amount of open instructional hours as required by the Ohio Department of Education. With this change in the calendar, our student’s last day of school is Thursday, May 28, 2015. Kings staff will report for a work day on Friday, May 29, 2015.”
Because Kings had canceled school eight times this year for winter weather, the district was looking at expanding the school calendar and making the last day of school June 2 – to make up 3 calamity days.
Kings Superintendent Tim Spinner said the State of Ohio’s changeover from counting school days attended to total hours
attended did not apply to Kings because collective bargaining agreements were executed prior to July 1, 2014.
“However,” Spinner said in a statement, “Memorandums of Understanding have been agreed upon by both unions thus
allowing us to make this change for the current school year. As we are currently in the middle of contract negotiations, how this situation will be handled next school year has yet to be determined.”
