FINAL UPDATEMehvish Safdar is the Ohio Div. 1 Girls Tennis Champion. The Cincinnati Ursuline Academy senior defeated Lauren Ghidotti, a senior from Columbus Bishop Watterson, 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon, completing a run through the tournament in which she did not lose a set.

FRIDAY UPDATE: Ismail falls (6-2, 6-3) in the quarterfinals to Eleanor Bullock, of Dublin Jerome, who also won her first match in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Another local favorite, Cincinnati Ursuline Academy’s Mehvish Safdar, dominated her second-round match, winning 6-0, 6-0. 

BREAKING: 1 p.m. Friday … Ismail rallies from one set down to win her first match (6-7, 6-2, 6-2), and will play again later Friday afternoon. She must win three more matches to become Div. 1 State Champion. The semi-finals and final match are Saturday at Hilliard Davidson High School.

In Division I singles, 2012 state champion Lauren Golick and runner-up Sandy Niehaus were both seniors last year. That could open the door for last year’s third-place finisher, Cincinnati Ursuline Academy’s Mehvish Safdar and Kings Mills Kings’ Amina Ismail. The two seniors are on opposite sides of the bracket and could meet in the finals.
