On Tuesday the Kings community learned that Knights basketball Junior guard, Tyler Mitchell, won ECC Player of the Year honors for basketball.
“I wasn’t expecting to win this mainly because the Anderson kid was great,” said Mitchell. “But I’m definitely excited to share this with him.”
Tyler finished the season averaging 14.7 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, and 2.9 rebounds per game while also shooting 41% from behind the arc.
Despite being a Junior, this was Tyler’s third season as a varsity guard. As a freshman he and head coach, Mike Stevens, grew close.
Mitchell said of his coach:
“He’s really helped me grow as a person. From freshman year to now he has helped me mature immensely on and off the court.”
Looking towards next season, Mitchell said he was rather excited about the team’s potential.
“We have a lot of guys coming back and some young guys who could step up and really produce for us,” he said. “I think we can win the league again next year and make a pretty nice splash in the tournament. And to start off the season we have Moeller at home, we’ll be ready.”
Also honored were Clay Spivey and Matt Sichterman for First Team All League and Braden Burnside for 2nd Team All League.
