The Lady Knights Volleyball team clinched the ECC Championship Tuesday night with a win over Anderson, and the squad’s seniors claim they have waited four long years for this moment.
The majority of this year’s team, with a record of 19-3 so far, consists of seven seniors: Rachel Lake, Victoria Lake, Christine Harris, Katlyn Horner, Audrey Farber, Darcy Kircher, and Riley Brashear. The rest of the team include one junior: Jenna Spiros, one sophomore; Rachel Rizzuto, and two freshman; Lizzy Woeste and Michaela Ruschau.
On Tuesday night, the varsity squad traveled to Anderson and won three out of five sets (27-25, 20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7).
“It was a great feeling,” said team captain Riley Brashear. “We were working as one team, one unit.”
Brashear said she knew fairly early on that the team was going to have a great season.
“Our first conference win at Loveland, I knew,” she said “We played with fire and energy, and I knew it was going to last the whole season. We have seven seniors, and hadn’t won the conference in four years. It’s a great feeling.”
Meanwhile, Tuesday night, the soccer varsity team also played at Anderson and won their game 6-0. Afterward, the girls came and cheered on the volleyball team to victory (see photo).
Varsity soccer player Kyelie Cudnohuske explained how enthusiastic the soccer teams were while cheering.
“It was safe to say that both soccer teams outnumbered and were louder than Anderson’s whole student section.” Cudnohuske said.
A statement from the Kings Athletic Department praised the team on a strong season.
“This is the first league title for the team since 2009 and a great win for their seniors, who will celebrate Senior Night at home this Thursday night (Oct. 10) against Glen Este.”
To cap off the season, Kings will host a city-wide Division 1 volleyball tournament next week.
