Kings High School’s Chamber Choir recently took a 15-hour trip to Florida to spend four nights and perform in Disney World’s annual Candlelight Processional.

The trip came as a surprise to the students, because little did they know that they auditioned for it late last year.

Here’s how it worked:

Scott Hayward and Hope Milthaler, directors of the choral department, told their students that they were singing a version of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” for Matthew Jenkins, another choral director at KME, who needed a version of high school students singing it.

After finally recording the song, the two directors sent the audition tape off to Disney to see if they were picked to sing at the Candlelight Processional.

The Candlelight Processional is held every year at Epcot Center, one of the parks located at Disney, joined by a 50-piece live orchestra and a celebrity narrator. This year the celebrity was Whoopi Goldberg, who told the story of Christmas in words and music while choirs from around the country joined together for the first time on stage.

While at Disney, the Kings choir participated in two different singing workshops, one with a student from Florida University and another with a cast member at Disney.

After two shows with the Voices of Liberty and other choirs in the Candlelight Processional, the choir spent all of their free time in multiple parks, including Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot.

Now King’s Chamber Choir will continue the hard work to move towards going to competition this year.
